CYP Bus Driver

Employment Category:   Temporary Flexible, 0-40 hours per week, without benefits.  NTE 3 months.

Duties:  Operates and performs operator maintenance on a 72 passenger school bus, which typically has an approximate gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 26,000 pounds and up to 32,000 pounds.  The vehicle is driven on the basis of specific field trip assignments, for the summer months, over public roads at highway speeds throughout rural or urban areas over Federal, State, and County roads and city streets in all traffic conditions.  Adheres to State, Local and Installation traffic laws and ordinances.  Maneuvers vehicle in and out of constricted areas, including narrow city streets and congested parking lots.  Complies with applicable safety requirements.  Receives instructions from Supervisor on the destination, passengers to be transported, purpose of the trip, deadlines to be met, and any special information.  Driving proficiency is assessed in terms of safe and expeditious completion of assigned job.  Responsible for selecting routes and obeying all traffic laws and safety regulations, as well as safely loading and unloading vehicle.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • Must possess a valid State of Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) class B or C.

  • Must be at least 21 years old.

  • Must have the ability to operate vehicles that are high, wide, long and heavy.

  • Knowledge to make difficult judgments concerning loading and arranging cargo, overhead and side clearances, turning radius, braking distance, and distance to be maintained from other vehicles.

  • Ability to back up using side mirrors and hand signals for spotters.

  • Skill in selecting alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic or other delaying conditions.

  • Ability to read a map and reach unfamiliar locations.

  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team.

  • Ability to favorably complete all required State and National Agency Background Checks.

  • Ability to favorably pass a pre-employment physical, provide evidence of immunization and be free of communicable disease.

Test Designated Position:  In accordance with the Department of the Navy Test Designated Position listing issued 7 October 2003 this position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment.  A positive drug test, or failure to submit for testing, may become the basis for removal from this position.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:   Heavy physical effort is required to maneuver long and heavy vehicles, especially when backing up.  Frequently lifts merchandise, supplies or equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.  Operates vehicle in all types of traffic and weather on public roads.          

Conditions of Employment:  Position is subject to special inoculation and immunization requirements.  Employee is required to obtain appropriate immunization against communicable diseases in accordance with recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which includes the influenza vaccine.  Must pass a pre-employment physical, provide evidence of immunization and be free from communicable disease.  Satisfactorily complete all background checks in accordance with PL 101-647 to include National Agency Check with Written Inquiries (NACI).  Must satisfactorily obtain or complete required training certificates and maintain certifications or credentials required by federal, state or National Accreditation institutions utilized as part of DOD’s Child and Youth Programs.
