Position:   Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard), NF-0189-02, Multiple positions - Seasonal

Salary:   $10.91 per hour

Employment Category:   Temporary Flexible, 0-40 hours per week, with no benefits.  May require working night, weekend and holiday hours.  NOTE:  A flexible employee is one who serves in either a continuing or temporary (time limited) position, on a scheduled or unscheduled (as needed or intermittent) basis, up to 40 hours per week. Flexible employees are not eligible to participate in the CNIC benefit programs, nor are they entitled to earn or use leave including military leave, court leave, sick or annual leave.

Location:   Aquatics Complex aboard Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, GA

Relocation Expenses:  Not Authorized

Area of Consideration:  All Sources – NOTE:  Applicant does not have to have current SUBASE access.  If selected for position, access will be granted upon a favorable background check.

Duties:  Pool Lifeguard duties comprise 60% of incumbent’s time and include but are not limited to:

  • Performs all pool lifeguard responsibilities (e.g., supervising swimmers/patrons and their activities, monitoring all natural water activities, applying first aid, enforcing safety rules, reporting safety hazards to supervisor, performing water rescues as necessary, etc.).
  • Observes conditions of area assigned.
  • Performs rescue work, promptly renders cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or emergency first aid, and calls for medical assistance as necessary.
  • Conducts and documents pool chemical testing results. Checks chlorine and pH levels on a scheduled basis.
  • Documents water conditions and weather conditions.

General duties comprise 40% of incumbent’s time and include but are not limited to:

  • Administers aquatic assessment testing and certification in accordance with Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Navy (DON) and CNIC policy.
  • Provides introductory equipment orientations, as needed.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between the activity, security, medical departments, and Aquatics Coordinator during emergency situations.
  • Performs cleaning duties and routine facility maintenance.
  • Inspects stands, boards, ropes, safety gear and condition of dressing rooms, ensuring they are within the condition required by environmental health standards.
  • Uses and maintains care of emergency equipment.
  • Enforces applicable policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:          

  • Must be 15 years old by 28 May 2021.

  • Must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate or other Nationally recognized Lifeguard Certification.Certificate must be provided with application.

  • Knowledge of pool safety rules.

  • Ability to appropriately identify hazards or hazardous situations and identify a patron’s need to for assistance immediately.

  • Ability to tactfully, but forcefully, provide instruction water safety, facility rules and regulations, and enforce them.

  • Ability to exercise control over a large group of people.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:   Work includes extended hours of sitting and standing and requires prolonged hours in the pool during swim lessons or other activities.  Work involves frequent lifting or pulling of pool equipment, cleaning supplies, and program participants.  Applicant must be able to maintain physical ability to complete the swim and rescue skill portion of their respective certifying agency.  The incumbent must be able to lift and carry objects up to 50lbs independently and objects over 50lbs with assistance, while performing normal duties in the area.  May perform work that poses physical demands beyond normal requirements during rescue.  Work is performed in outdoor aquatic facilities.  Outdoor aquatics facilities are subjected to variable weather conditions.         

Other Factors:

-Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.

-Must be able to work varied work schedules to include nights, weekends and holidays.

-Must be able to work with hazardous and biohazardous materials (e.g., cleaning agents, pool chemicals, blood, etc.).

-Must be able to satisfactorily complete background investigation - National Agency Check with Written Inquires (NACI), upon hiring and renew every 5 years.

-Must be able to pass an initial and recurrent physical agility test.

Lifeguard Pool:

Must possess and maintain the following certifications:

  • Lifeguard Training Certification in accordance with CNICINST 1710.3;
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Providers;
  • First Aid to include Automated External Defibrillator Certification; and
  • Blood Borne Pathogens.

Basis of Review:   Applicants will be evaluated based on experience and qualifications described above and presented in written format.
